Launching of m/v Janssonius from Oceanwide Expeditions | Polarjournal

It’s not every day that one has a reason to celebrate, but the launch of Oceanwide Expeditions’ new ship certainly is. On March 11, 2021, the new Polar Class 6 ship, the m/v “Janssonius”, was launched at the Brodosplit shipyard in Split, Croatia. Similar to Oceanwide Expeditions’ last newbuild, the m/v “Hondius”, the new m/v “Janssonius” represents one of the most technologically advanced and structurally reinforced expedition cruise ships.

We are very pleased to welcome a vessel similar to the m/v “Hondius” to our fleet,” said Michel van Gessel, CEO of Oceanwide. “The “Hondius” has performed outstandingly in the polar regions and we look forward to providing identical services and high quality exploration cruises in the Arctic and Antarctic with the “Janssonius”.”

The “Janssonius” is not only designed for maximum safety and speed, but also for minimum environmental impact: LED lighting, biodegradable paints and lubricants, steam heating and flexible energy management systems keep fuel consumption and CO2 levels low.

“For us at Oceanwide, the “Janssonius” is more than just an exciting new addition to our fleet. It symbolizes our unwavering belief in our company and the future of polar travel.

Thanks in part to our recent investment from Bolster Investment Partners, we continue to be a healthy, robust and optimistic company capable of planning itineraries, booking voyages and building ships that lead the latest advances in the polar cruise industry.” said van Gessel when asked about future plans.

“We named the Janssonius after the 17th century Dutch cartographer Jan Janssonius, the son-in-law of the Flemish cartographer Jodocus Hondius, after whom our ship Hondius was also named”. The Janssonius will be completed in November this year and will be available as early as the 2021/22 Antarctic season.
