Silversea – new from Puerto Williams to Antarctica | Polarjournal
Silversea’s “Silver Explorer”, is primarily intended for voyages to some of the world’s most remote destinations, such as the two polar regions. Thanks to the reinforced hull and ice class 1A, the expedition cruise ship can make its way safely through the ice floes. (Photo: Silversea)

Starting in November 2021, the shipping company Silversea will depart from Puerto Williams for Antarctica. The Chilean town is located on Isla Navarino on the south side of the Beagle Channel diagonally opposite to Ushuaia. Puerto Williams has about 2,500 inhabitants.

As part of the all-inclusive package, guests will depart Santiago de Chile from a private terminal on an exclusive midday flight and fly directly to Puerto Williams. The flight offers more legroom and additional baggage allowance. During the flight, guests can enjoy a range of gourmet experiences.

The return flight from Santiago de Chile to Puerto Williams is included in the Antarctic expedition.

Upon arrival in Puerto Williams, guests do not have to go through customs clearance. Instead, they enjoy a quick transfer that takes them directly to the pier.

Puerto Williams is sometimes referred to as the southernmost city in the world. However, this designation is disputed in the absence of a uniform definition of the term “city”. While Puerto Williams has only about 2,500 inhabitants, Argentinian Ushuaia, which is only a little further north, has almost 57,000 inhabitants.

A welcome dinner reception and one-night hotel stay in Santiago prior to the cruise, transfers and luggage handling between the airport, hotel and ship are all standard with Silversea.

After their expedition cruise, guests will once again take a special flight from Puerto Williams to Santiago de Chile. For guests who do not have an international return flight available on disembarkation day, an additional hotel night with transfers is included.

The private flight benefit from Santiago to Puerto Williams is operated through Silversea’s exclusive partnership with “DAP Antarctic Airways”.

Silversea will deploy the three expedition ships Silver Explorer, Silver Cloud and Silver Wind to Antarctica during the 2021/22 Antarctic season.

The solar eclipse in Antarctica should be a unique experience.

The three ships take different routes with a duration of 10 – 20 days under the keel. Two Silversea cruises will also offer the opportunity to view the solar eclipse on December 4, 2021 in Antarctica, the only place where it can be seen in its entirety.
