The “purest ice” in the world has arrived in Dubai after a journey of nine weeks and a distance of 20,000 kilometers. The ice, which is over 100,000 years old, was extracted from glaciers in Greenland and optimized for transport.
According to Arctic Ice, the iceberg ice has little to no taste and ensures that, unlike ice made from tap or mineral water, it does not change the taste of drinks when it melts. With normal ice, you never know how it changes drinks, but with the ice from Greenland, the drink tasted exactly as it should.
Samir Ben Tabib, chairman of international relations at Arctic Ice, said there was “strong interest” in ice from Greenland from restaurants and hotels in the United Arab Emirates. “Our ice can be used for all kinds of beverages and food. We also already have pre-orders for the Greenland ice. The ice is not sold to everyone. Our exclusive product and the venue have to fit together.”
The company has finished packaging the ice and delivery is due to start in a month’s time. The purest ice on earth is stored in the same way as normal ice cubes.
Tabib did not disclose the cost of shipping the product to Dubai or the retail price, but said it will be available in high-end restaurants, cafes and for wealthy individuals.
Malik V. Rasmussen, co-founder of Arctic Ice, says: “We don’t take ice from glaciers. In the warmer months, tons of ice break off the glaciers every year. Our very limited production therefore has a very insignificant impact on glacier melt. We only collect ice that has already broken away from the glacier and is floating in the fjords. Ice that would otherwise simply melt into the sea.”
After harvesting, the ice is processed and filled into food-approved and insulated transport crates. After arriving in Greenland’s capital Nuuk, it is packed into refrigerated containers for international transportation.
The company’s website states: “Arctic Ice comes directly from the natural glaciers in the Arctic, which have been in a frozen state for more than 100,000 years. These parts of the ice sheet have had no contact with soil and have not been contaminated by human activity. This makes Arctic Ice the cleanest H2Oon earth.”
Depending on sales and orders, the company is planning the next delivery in a few months. Arctic Ice wants to shorten the transportation time for the next delivery to five weeks by transporting it via Germany instead of Denmark.
